چکیده

Alternative routing of calls has long been acknowledged as a means of increasing call throughput and robustness in the telephone network. Given these performance gains, it is natural to consider dynamic routing of Virtual Circuits (VCs) in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. Unlike telephone networks, VCs have heterogeneous bandwidth characteristics and Quality of Service requirements that the routing algorithm must take into account in order to optimize performance. In this paper we attempt to classify ATM networks according to the network characteristics that have the greatest bearing on the performance of dynamic routing algorithms; we also discuss appropriate routing algorithms for diierent classes of ATM network. The classiication is based on the degree of heterogeneity of the sources and the degree of statistical multiplexing.

Routing in Atm Networks

Various routing methodologies are implemented both in connection-oriented and connectionless networks. From the perspective of ATM networks especially those that address issues of QoS and dynamic networks are important ones. ATM was originally developed as a switching standard for support of broadband integrated services in public, switched telephone network. This makes it natural to consider r...

The PNNI Emulator: A Versatile Tool for Planning and Operation Support of PNNI Networks

ATM networks which are expected to be deployed on a large scale require a flexible and scalable routing architecture. Appropriate architecture has been designed by the ATM Forum: the Private Network Node Interface (PNNI) comprising a routing and a signaling protocol. While the PNNI routing protocol offers a wide range of mechanisms to deal with scalability and support of Quality of Service para...

Analysis of the Overhead of Saturation Routing for ATM Networks

This paper shows that the virtual path selection by a saturation (flooding) technique is a viable adaptive routing solution for substantial data exchanges in an ATM network. Adaptive routing algorithms are the leading techniques used today in Packet Data Networks. Typically, current measurements are used to derive non-congested new routes for future traffic. However, often, current measurements...

Modeling Ip over Atm

ATM is becoming a widely used technology as a backbone for connecting data networks. An important consideration when analyzing the performance of data traffic over switched networks such as ATM is the routing scheme utilized. The IP layer traditionally handles all routing processes in TCP/IP networks. For ATM, OPNET contains standard models that map IP packet traffic to ATM virtual circuits. Ho...

Credit-Flow-Controlled ATM versus Wormhole Routing

ATM has been adopted as the main high speed technology in both wide and local area networks. When ATM is combined with credits −the flow control mechanism that is particularly suitable for local data communication− it becomes appropriate for multiprocessor interconnection networks as well. Actually, credit-flowcontrolled ATM has similarities with wormhole routing, one of the most popular archit...
